DILUTION GUIDE

About This Oil

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the world's most popular and versatile essential oil. Ours is sourced from the legendary lavender fields of Provence, France, where rows of fragrant purple flowers bloom from June through August at elevations that produce an exceptionally balanced oil. True lavender (angustifolia) is distinct from lavandin (a hybrid) — it has a softer, more complex floral profile with less camphor. It is non-phototoxic, non-sensitizing, and one of the gentlest essential oils available.

Safe Dilution Ratios (Max 3%)

Lavender is exceptionally well-tolerated at standard dilutions. While some references note lavender as safe to use undiluted in small amounts (e.g., a drop on a pillowcase), we recommend diluting for all topical use as a best practice.

Drop counts are approximate — actual drop size varies by dispenser.

Application Lavender Drops Carrier Oil Notes
Face & Neck 6–8 drops 1 tbsp (15 ml) ~1.2–1.6% dilution — gentle for daily facial care
Body & Massage 10–15 drops 1 tbsp (15 ml) 2–3% dilution (safe for most adults)
Scalp Treatment 5–8 drops 2 tbsp (30 ml) Massage into scalp; leave 30 min, then shampoo
Bath Soak 8–12 drops 1–2 cups bath salts Mix into salts first — never add oil directly to water
Pillow / Linen Spray 10–15 drops 4 oz water + emulsifier Shake well before each use; mist pillows lightly
Diffuser 3–5 drops Water reservoir No carrier needed; diffuse 30–60 min before bed

Diffuser Ratios by Room Size

Room Size Lavender Drops Duration
Small (bathroom, closet) 2–3 drops 20–30 minutes
Medium (bedroom, office) 3–5 drops 30–60 minutes
Large (living room, kitchen) 5–7 drops 40–60 minutes

Always perform a patch test before first topical use: apply a diluted amount to the inner forearm and wait 24 hours before broader application.

HOW TO USE
⚠️ Good News: Lavender is non-phototoxic, non-sensitizing, and one of the gentlest essential oils available. No UV restrictions needed. Still, we recommend diluting before all topical use as a best practice, and keeping away from infants.

Essential oils are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.

Sleep & Relaxation

  1. Diffuse 3–5 drops for 30–60 minutes before bedtime.
  2. Place 1–2 drops on a tissue and tuck inside your pillowcase.
  3. For a pillow spray: add 10–15 drops to a 4 oz spray bottle of water with ½ teaspoon of polysorbate 20 or witch hazel as an emulsifier. Shake well, then lightly mist pillows and linens.
  4. For a relaxing evening soak, add 8–12 drops to 1–2 cups of Epsom Salt, dissolve in warm bathwater, and soak for 15–20 minutes.

Aromatherapy & Diffusing

  1. Add 3–5 drops to your diffuser's water reservoir.
  2. Diffuse for 30–60 minutes at a time, with breaks between sessions.
  3. For a calming blend, combine with 2 drops of Sweet Orange and 1 drop of Patchouli.
  4. For on-the-go aromatherapy, place 1–2 drops on a tissue or cotton ball and inhale as needed.

Skincare & Topical Use

  1. Add 6–8 drops to 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of carrier oil for face, or 10–15 drops for body.
  2. Apply to skin, avoiding eyes, mucous membranes, and broken skin.
  3. Can add 2–3 drops to existing moisturizers, serums, or body lotions.
  4. Non-phototoxic — safe for daytime use with no UV restrictions.

Massage

  1. Add 10–15 drops of lavender oil to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, or coconut).
  2. Warm between palms and apply with long, smooth strokes.
  3. Pairs beautifully with Rosemary for a herbal blend or Peppermint for a cooling-calming combination.

Bath & Foot Soaks

  1. Add 8–12 drops of lavender oil to 1–2 cups of Epsom Salt or Magnesium Chloride Bath Flakes.
  2. Stir thoroughly, then dissolve the salt mixture in warm bathwater.
  3. Never add essential oil directly to water — it will float undiluted on the surface and may irritate skin.
  4. Soak for 15–20 minutes for a deeply relaxing experience.

Natural Cleaning & Freshening

  1. Add 15–20 drops of lavender oil to a 16 oz spray bottle of water.
  2. Add 1 teaspoon of castile soap or ½ teaspoon of polysorbate 20 as an emulsifier.
  3. Shake well before each use.
  4. Use on countertops, bathroom surfaces, and as a linen freshener. Avoid natural stone surfaces (granite, marble).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is this lavender oil organic?

Yes. Our lavender essential oil is 100% pure, certified organic Lavandula angustifolia from Provence, France. It contains no synthetic additives, fillers, fragrance oils, or preservatives. It is steam-distilled from flowering tops and hand-bottled at our US facility.

What does lavender essential oil smell like?

Lavender has a fresh, floral, herbaceous aroma with sweet, slightly camphoraceous undertones. Provence lavender is known for its exceptionally balanced and complex profile — softer and more nuanced than lavandin (a hybrid). As a middle note, lavender provides body and balance in blends.

What is the difference between true lavender and lavandin?

True lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) — what we sell — is the original species with a softer, more complex aroma and higher linalyl acetate content. Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) is a hybrid with higher camphor content, making it sharper and more medicinal. True lavender from Provence is considered the premium choice for aromatherapy and skincare.

Can lavender essential oil help with sleep?

Lavender is the most widely used essential oil for promoting a calming bedtime environment. Research suggests that inhaling lavender aroma may help support feelings of relaxation and improve the subjective quality of sleep. Try diffusing 3–5 drops for 30–60 minutes before bed, or placing 1–2 drops on a tissue inside your pillowcase.

How do I dilute lavender essential oil for skin?

Lavender has a maximum safe topical dilution of 3%. For body and massage, use 10–15 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil. For face and neck, use 6–8 drops per tablespoon (~1.2–1.6%). While lavender is sometimes considered safe for undiluted spot application, we recommend always diluting as a best practice.

Is lavender essential oil safe for children?

Lavender is one of the gentlest essential oils and is commonly used in products for older children. However, do not apply any essential oil on or near the face of infants. For children ages 2 and older, use at half the adult dilution rate (1–1.5%) and avoid applying near the face. Always consult a pediatrician before using essential oils on children.

Is lavender essential oil phototoxic?

No. Lavender oil is non-phototoxic, meaning you do not need to avoid sunlight after applying it to skin. It is safe for daytime topical use.

What carrier oils work best with lavender?

Jojoba oil is excellent for facial use — lightweight and non-comedogenic. Sweet almond oil is wonderful for massage. Fractionated coconut oil works well for roll-on blends. For bath soaks, use Epsom Salt or Magnesium Chloride Bath Flakes as a carrier instead of oil.

Is lavender essential oil safe for pets?

Cats are particularly sensitive to essential oils because they lack the liver enzymes to metabolize certain compounds. Do not apply essential oils directly to pets, and ensure diffusing areas are well-ventilated with an exit route for animals. Consult your veterinarian before using any essential oil around pets.

How many drops are in a 15 ml bottle?

Approximately 300 drops, using the standard euro dropper cap included with each bottle. Actual count varies slightly depending on oil viscosity and dispensing speed.

How should I store lavender oil?

Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tightly sealed. Lavender has a shelf life of 2–4 years when stored properly. Refrigeration is not required but won't harm the oil. If the aroma changes significantly, consider replacing the bottle.

Can I ingest lavender essential oil?

No. Our essential oils are formulated, tested, and labeled for external use only. Essential oils are extremely concentrated. For culinary lavender flavor, use dried culinary-grade lavender buds instead.

Can I make a pillow spray with lavender oil?

Yes — add 10–15 drops to a 4 oz spray bottle of water with ½ teaspoon of polysorbate 20 or witch hazel as an emulsifier. Shake well before each use and lightly mist pillows and linens before bed. This is one of the most popular and simple ways to incorporate lavender into a bedtime routine.
