If you're one of the millions of people who suffer from migraine headaches, you may not realize that low magnesium is contributing to your symptoms.

Adding certain types of magnesium supplements to your routine may alleviate migraines and a left side headache.

What is Magnesium?

What is magnesium?

Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral, present in certain kinds of foods.

It's important to the healthy function of the human body, helping to play a role in over 300 types of enzyme reactions in the body.

Magnesium functions include helping with muscle and nerve function, as well as supporting the immune system and regulating blood pressure.

Who is Prone To Low Magnesium Levels?

Americans may be deficient in magnesium and prone to migraines

People who don't get enough magnesium in their diets, such as eating foods high in magnesium like almonds, cashew nuts, and spinach, may need to take supplements, to avoid magnesium deficiency.

In fact, many people in the U.S. don't get the right amount of magnesium, and therefore may be susceptible to the effects of low magnesium.

What are Migraines?

what are migraines?

Migraines are a type of headache, characterized by throbbing, severe pain, and pulsing sensations.

Those often occur on just one side of the head, and may be known as "left side headache." In addition to the aching head, migraines also may be accompanied by sensitivity to sound and bright lights, and nausea and vomiting.

Many people experience pain for hours, and sometimes days.

However, these headaches can be predicted by warning symptoms or triggers, and avoiding the intensity of these can include understanding when things like hormonal changes (including right before your period starts), stress, exercise, or eating or drinking certain things cause migraines.

How are Migraines Related to Magnesium Deficiency?

For many people, lower levels of magnesium contribute to migraines.

In fact, according to one study, people who began supplementing with magnesium reduced the frequency of these attacks by over 40%.

Furthermore, people who have regular migraine headaches may have a genetic predisposition to the inability to absorb magnesium, and therefore should take supplements as directed by their physician.

Or, magnesium deficiency can contribute to migraines.

What are the Symptoms of Migraines?

What are symptoms of a migraine?

Migraine symptoms include pounding headaches and sensitivity to light and noise. Other symptoms of migraine headaches include nausea and vomiting.

Many people find that these headaches interrupt their daily lives.

Migraines are often triggered by certain circumstances, such as a particular food or beverage, or by hormonal changes, especially for women.

Some people may have migraines triggered by external stimulants, such as stress or other issues in their lives.

How Can Magnesium Improve Migraines?

There are several types of magnesium, which can be used to help reduce the symptoms and duration of migraine headaches.

These include:

  • Magnesium Chloride, which can be easily absorbed in the body
  • Magnesium Citrate, which is often used to help with bowel movements, and large amounts of this can be absorbed into the body
  • Magnesium Oxide, a high-level supplement often used to treat migraines
  • Magnesium Sulfate, an inorganic form of magnesium and a supplement that only allows small amounts to be absorbed
  • Magnesium Carbonate, which has slightly higher levels of magnesium and may cause nausea or upset in the GI tract

I have some of your bulk magnesium powder but unsure of the proper way to take it. Do you have suggestions on proper mixing with either food and/or liquids and advice on how much to take daily? Any help would be appreciated.
