Imagine going for a midmorning walk in your neighborhood. You take deep breaths of fresh air until suddenly you can’t. Your chest becomes tight and you’re left gasping – trying to fill your lungs with oxygen.

Unfortunately, this is the reality of suffering with asthma. The risk of not being able to breathe at a moment’s notice is threatening and oftentimes, an inhaler and medication are the only methods for long term symptom control.

But more research is pointing towards Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) Powder as an alternative to keep asthma symptoms at bay.

What is Asthma and How Do You Get it?

Asthma triggers

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that makes it difficult to move air in and out of your lungs. With asthma, your lungs swell and become inflamed making them sensitive to things in your daily environment.

These sensitivities are called triggers and can be anything from a cold to pet dander. When a trigger enters your body, your airways swell more than usual, narrowing the space for air to pass in and out of your lungs.

Thus, the classic signs of an “asthma attack” begin.

What Are the Symptoms of Asthma?

Asthma symptoms vary from person to person and depend on the severity of the condition, but they generally include:

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Chest tightness or pain.
  • Poor sleep caused by shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing.
  • A whistling or wheezing sound when exhaling (especially common in children).
  • Coughing or wheezing attacks worsened by a respiratory virus like the cold or flu.

Asthma can affect children and adults. While there is no cure for this condition, symptoms can be managed.

How is Asthma Typically Treated?

Person using inhaler

Asthma treatments depend on age, asthma severity and individual medical history.

Most people with asthma are treated with daily medicine called long-term control medicine as well as inhalers for short term relief during an asthma attack or when symptoms worsen.

What is MSM and How Can it Help Relieve Asthma Symptoms?

Like any other condition, prevention and treatment are critical for those suffering with or those at risk for developing asthma.

While conventional medicine is where most turn to, research shows that Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) Powder may be a promising treatment as well.

MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in plants, animals, and humans. It can also be found in green vegetables and other food products or made as a supplement in a lab.

MSM is needed for healthy connective tissues, joint function, proper enzyme activity, hormone balance, and immune system function.

How Does MSM Help With Asthma?

Model of lungs

Studies show MSM can help treat asthma symptoms in the following ways:

By Reducing Inflammation

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, MSM may help ease asthma symptoms.

As an anti-inflammatory, MSM stops the lungs from swelling and narrowing when a trigger is present.

This swelling and narrowing of airways makes breathing difficult for asthma sufferers.

But if MSM can keep the lungs and airways open, this prevents an asthma attack altogether despite triggers.

By Improving Gut Health

They say health begins in the gut and this may be especially true for those suffering from asthma.

Our gut microflora (good bacteria in the body) regulate our immune response. This response helps our bodies recognize safe environmental particles from harmful ones.

Examples of safe particles include pollen, dust, and weeds while harmful particles are bad bacteria, bad yeast, and viruses.

When our gut microflora changes, our immune system becomes overly sensitive to these safe particles causing them to trigger asthma symptoms when they shouldn't.

MSM ensures our immune system won’t over-inflame when stimulated. It also rebuilds the lining of the digestive tract which prevents inflammatory reactions to triggers.

By Generating New Cells

MSM increases cell wall permeability, allowing water and nutrients to effectively flow into the body and toxins to flow out.

Our bodies use MSM along with Vitamin C to create new, healthy cells. One consequence of lacking these healthy cells is damaged lung tissue - bad news for asthma sufferers.

Additionally, MSM enables you to intake more oxygen while improving lung cell elasticity and permeability of the lung cell membranes.

Both improvements allow you to breathe deeper and deliver more oxygen to your bloodstream which is a big plus for those with asthma.

  • Sotero: Hello, thank you for reaching out! We’re happy to hear MSM is working fine for you so far. Unfortunately, we are unable to say if it won’t interfere with your medication because we are not medical professionals and do not know your personal medical history. This is why we advise our customers to check with their doctors prior to adding a supplement to their daily wellness routine. You mention your doctor’s consultation is unreliable, and we’re sorry for this, but we wouldn’t be able to say whether or not MSM is safe and effective for your specific condition and medication. We appreciate your understanding.

  • To the person that has migraines:
MSM powder also detoxifies. The poison in your body is more likely to be released by MSM and cause a headache or flu. Drink plenty of water and sweat. When your body becomes clean you will feel great! I will keep taking msm until I drop! MSM + Vitamin C = Great skin!

  • No name: Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We were unaware of this specific side effect and will adjust our side effects list for MSM accordingly. Every individual reacts differently to supplements so we’re sorry to hear yours was a negative one. Sometimes this occurs as a detox effect, expecially when MSM is first introduced to the body. You can bypass this by taking small doses in the beginning and gradually increasing the amount you take as your body becomes more used to the supplement. This is also why we always recommend speaking with your physician before adding a supplement to your routine. As for the asthma symptoms, MSM is recommended as a long term method and is not necessarily for acute symptoms. As mentioned in the article, MSM helps reduce inflammation, improve gut health and generate new cells which require some time to take effect and consistency with taking the supplement since it’s not a quick fix. We’re sorry this didn’t work for you, but we appreciate you reaching out.
